I am sure many of you would’ve started the new year on a resolution to excel in the GMAT exam. Be it first timers or if you are taking the GMAT again to better your previous attempts, the goal of every GMAT taker is to get glory in GMAT. Afterall it is the GMAT score that they obtain which becomes an important determinant of whether an examinee gets a shot at a leading Business School or not.

The GMAT exam fascinates me for an important reason which is that the benchmarks set are quite high. Therefore, one cannot afford to have a slip and needs to be on their toes ensuring that the GMAT prep or the GMAT strategy which they adopt is in tune with the times and helps them in sailing through this important milestone. GMAT is not for the averages and the average GMAT scores are rarely factored into by leading B-Schools across the globe. My experience with GMAT taught me a lot of things. A. Never believe something is difficult. And B. Always believe everything is achievable. I started off with dreams of making it big in life and thanks to the good base I have what all I ever wanted in life.

I came accross plenty of websites, some like forums, free, but not much activity, some fulll of advertisements, but very less content. Some as slow as a tortoise and still giving costly courses/memberships.

I joined a few groups in Orkut and Yahoo with like-minded GMAT enthusiasts. Last week I came to know of a website Scorechase, perfect for GMAT Preparation. This website is absolutely new and has awesome content. In past two weaks it has picked up like hot cakes.

More members and activity is obviously required. But what I really like about this website is the involvement of its staff. The have experts to help members out and answer their queries for Verbal and Math practice questions. Their paid course is really cheap! Its just $6/mth and they provide GMAT practice questions.

There are all free discussion areas, where members can discuss their questions and doubts.

I strongly recommend this site to anyone who is preparing for GMAT.

If you ask me what is the one most important fact to look for in a university while planning to study abroad. ‘Accreditation’ is my answer, Hands down! Accreditation is now-a-days ‘the most important’ word while planning to apply for schools. Earlier I was of the view that scholarship providing schools or schools in big cities are the best options but I have started believing that, for a 2 year scholarship or for the sake of living in a big town, no one should or can afford to put the entire career in jeopardy. Accreditation decides your career and life in a major way when you are on a foreign soil. A friend of mine who was junior to me in medical school went to a non- accredited school in UK. After his graduation he was not considered for any jobs or higher study options. On the contrary, his classmates who were of British origin got jobs although they had a lower GPA. It does matter for an international student as natives have opportunities irrespective of the accreditation status of the school they went to.

In common terms, accreditation is the official recognition of a school, university or institution for provision of satisfactory education, training or exam preparation. This in turn can help employers/ hiring agencies to know who they are hiring when you complete your education. Applicants to Business Schoolsspend a lot of time studying for the GMAT and worrying about their score. Let’s examine why the GMAT plays a role in the application process and what it indicates to the admissions committee.

The GMAT exam was created in 1954 because business schoolsdid not think that existing tests gauged very precisely the academic skills that graduate business programs demanded. Hence if you have a strong overall score but are much weaker in one section vs. another it may raise questions about the specific skills they are trying to test in that section.

The latest issue of Graduate Management News, the Graduate Management Admissions Council’s newsletter provides some great examples of how certain types of questions test these skills. The May 2010 issue states that “Data Sufficiency very succinctly measures your ability to sort through a lot of information and pick only what you need to solve a problem. It also tests your ability to think through solving a problem using different bits of data. Business schools demand both, as students are often presented with complicated case studies with lots of exhibits and financial statements and must figure out how to solve problems without getting bogged down in excessive detail.”  The Graduate Management News also goes on to explain how critical reasoning questions help to identify “students with a raw ability to connect facts, to detect patterns, to discriminate true causation from spurious correlations”.  The newsletter states that “In business school, as in the business world, you will be asked to collaborate on projects and evaluate the ideas and arguments of others, and the ability to do that succinctly is important……The real world is such a messy place that it is often hard to spot the proper correlation among facts, let alone to pin down the right ‘cause-effect’ connections.”

So, if you have a lower than desired GMAT score think about other things in your academic background or in your professional experience that can help to demonstrate the skills that the GMAT is trying to test.

 

I am new to Dubai,and hence visited the bookstores in the malls,but they seem to have fiction and some categories of non-fiction.Is there a specific bookstore/chain of bookstores that specializes in educational books here in Dubai? I thought Amazon could be an option (as I always used it for ordering whilst in London) but the delivery charges are more than the cost of the books themselves !! Thanks for all your help 🙂
