This section does not assume detailed knowledge of the subject matter. Instead, the test measures your ability to understand, analyze and apply information presented in written form. All of the questions are to be answered based on what is stated or implied in the passage.

These questions evaluate your ability to: (1) understand the reading passage, (2) follow the logical of the passage and evaluate the importance of the arguments presented, and (3) draw inferences.

* Critical Reasoning Questions

These questions test the skills involved in making and evaluating arguments as well as creating and evaluating plans of action. Items tap your ability to construct, evaluate, and form arguments and plans of action.

* Sentence Correction Questions

These questions test your ability to correctly express ideas in standard written English and to improve incorrect or ineffective expressions.

Quantitative Section

The quantitative section tests basic math skills and your ability to understand and apply quantitative skills to solve problems. Two types of questions appear:

* Problem Solving

Test basic math skills, the understanding of basic concepts and the ability to reason and solve quantiative problems

* Data Sufficiency Questions

Each item consists of a question and two statements that contain additional info. Your job is to decide if there is sufficient info to answer the question posed. This measures your ability to analyze problems.

Analytical Writing

The Analytical Writing Assessment tests your ability to analyze and evaluate issues and arguments. This portion of the exam consists of two 30-minute writing tasks

* Analysis of an Issue

Analyze an issue and explain your point of view, providing reasons and examples. Ability to form an argument.

* Analysis of an Argument

Analyze the reasoning behind an argument and write critique of that argument. this measures your ability to think critically.

If you’re applying to graduate, law, medical, or business school you’ll be required to take a standard examination. Few students relish the idea of standardized tests, but they help admissions officials determine who is capable of withstanding the rigors of graduate school. Why?

Standardized tests permit students from a variety of universities and colleges with differing grading standards to be compared. For example, consider two applicants with GPAs of 4.0, but from different universities. Is the 4.0 from the state university similar to the 4.0 from the ivy league college? A standardized exam permits these two applicants’ abilities to be compared fairly. Standardized tests are also the basis for awarding fellowships and other forms of financial assistance.

Applicants to graduate school complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), which tests verbal, quantitative, and analytical abilities. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is taken by prospective business school also measures verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning but it is tailored to the needs of business schools. Prospective law students take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), which measures reading, writing, and logical reasoning. Finally, students who hope to attend medical school take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).

Most standardized, graduate-school tests are designed to identify potential success or capacities for success, rather than measure specific knowledge or achievement. While some subject knowledge is essential (the Medical College Admission Test, for instance, evaluates fluency in the sciences), most standardized tests seek to judge a candidate’s thinking skills.

Exceptional standardized test scores can open up new educational opportunities, especially for students with weak applications because of low GPAs, for example. However, note that although performance on standardized tests is a strong factor in the admissions process, it is not the only element that will net you an acceptance to the graduate school of your dreams. Undergraduate transcripts, recommendation letters and a personal statement are other considerations.

GMAT Test Preparation for 3 months was well worth the effort!. I am absolutely thrilled with my score 760 [Q:51, V:45] . I expected >700 easily with my prep, but never expected it to go so high.

Start:

I started my GMAT preparation in October [I forgot to mention, my first mock test score in october was 580] , here is the first advice I got from Guardian and Sneha [the GMAT Tutors on Scorechase], which I relegiously followed:

– DO NOT refer to a LOT of material. concentrate on basics for 2 weeks and then PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

– Stay positive, if you have worked hard for it, you will do it.

– Take GMAT Gold Seekers membership [its worth every penny!]

– Remember: You have got nothing to loose, nothing is the end of the road.

Given the advice, here is the material I recommend:

– Manhattan SC for sentence correction – dont read it digest it.

– OG11 – read math concepts, practice SC ONLY after you have completed Manhattan SC

– Scorechase Gold Seekers Cove subscription [that made my day]- do MGs and VGs religiously, pm Sneha/guardian if you dont get any of them, but solve them religiously ..each of them

– beatthegmat forum [great resources]

– GMATPrep tests [ take them more than 2 times to exhaust all questions from the bank]

– Kaplan tests [I hate them, but if you are scoring around 700 in GMATPrep then these definitely help[although the max I got in Kaplan was 680]

And thats it for the prep!!

Final day of the exam

– Took rest, as is always wisely adviced. Believe me you would need it in verbal.

– Reached an hr earlier and relaxed.

GMAT exam

AWA: easy, just look around for some tips needs 4-5 days of prep at max.

Math:

I got quite a few concepts on algebra. I was surprised to see no questions on mean/median/SD.

Verbal:

– Got 3 RCs, I had read it just couple of days ago and that saved me a bunch of time in reading and digesting the paragraph. The other two RCs … one was political and other was about butterflies .

– SCs were purely GMAT type, Manhattan SC will do it. Saw just a couple of VGs, but that was enough to boost my confidence, I knew I got em right and was sailing. For verbal, if anything else except Manhattan is needed ..Sneha’s explanations will fill the void

– CRs always strong for me ..

Overall, was expecting somewhere around 720 , 40 marks I guess bonus, MGs and VGs helped.

The month of June-July-August-September is the time when most GMAT takers take their test. MBAchase has interviewed successful students and have done extensive research on the web for top tips in order to get highest score in the GMAT exam. After that, MBAchase expert team went through tons of discussion sessions to bring the following top 10 tips for you.

1. Start early – The time required to prepare for exam depends on individual to individual. Nevertheless, a solid 2-3 months, in general, is good enough to study and practice enough to score well on GMAT.

2. Set early deadline goal – If your exam is in the end of August, set an internal goal of end of July as being the exam date for you. This strategy seems simple and of common sense, but many people fail to follow it. Group of people who have followed this technique have actually been benefited by having proper revision time and having time to handle surprises (like escalation at work, getting sick, attending wedding of a friend, etc.).

3. Study Material – There are standard practice test material available in the market: review those, talk to your friends, get an expert’s advice and then select 1-2 books as material to prepare. The most important reference book that we recommend is ‘The Official Guide (OG)’ and MBAchase Math/Verbal workbooks as supplement.

4. Plan, prepare and proceed – Someone has rightly said that, “recipe for success is – plan your work and work your plan”. Make a reasonable plan and stick to it. Clear out other commitments and put GMAT preparation as the top priority for those 2-3 months in which you are preparing for the exam.

5. Participate in discussion forums – Participation in discussion forums will help you enjoy the process of preparation by asking and answering questions. It also helps you in getting awareness on different aspects of GMAT exam that you may otherwise miss. Remember forum is a place where multiple brains are sharing information, and your brain is just one of them. Learn from others, and share your learning while you do so.

6. Self study or private tutoring – The answer to this question depends on individual study style. However, if you have been out of touch with basic English and/or Maths for sometime, it may make sense to go in for at least some introductory courses. However, it is important to discipline yourself, make a routine with realistic goals and do serious preparation.

7. Balance your time devotion -Time should be devoted in accordance with the section that you are weak at. For Engineering students, quant section may be easy to score but verbal may be daunting. It would be wise (and of course) common sense that you devote more time on verbal without ignoring quants completely.

8. Practice, practice and practice – Take as many GMAT tests as possible. MBAchase recommends taking at least 6 CAT tests and may be another five non-CAT tests. Taking CAT tests will help you prepare the exam in GMAT simulation mode. You will find good set of Non-adaptive test set on mbachase.com to get ready for CAT version of the test.

9. Take time to analyze – Practice as much as possible, but also take proper time to analyze the result. Learn from each and every mistake of yours and never repeat it again. MBAchase team recommends that you keep some kind of an error log and review it on periodic basis.

10. Master the fundamentals – Last but not the least, master the basics. While preparing for GMAT, it is important that you have clarity on fundamentals. Remember, GMAT is a standardized exam to test your fundamentals in verbal and quant.

MBAchase team strongly believes that low proficiency in English will not necessarily preclude you from cracking the GMAT verbal. Similarly, the fact that you may be from a non-mathematical background will not prevent you from getting a perfect score in the quant part. One of the first steps that any GMAT aspirant takes is to research and buy a few books. But if you are looking to score 700+ you MUST be wiling to learn the concepts provided in the books. Why? Schedule properly.

Three months would be enough to plot your calendar of study sessions and activities. This will help you prepare yourself not just mentally and intellectually, but physically and emotionally as well. If before, you were quite lax with your studies, now is the time to learn from those mistakes and make the most of this time.

Remember your mistakes

As you do your practice tests, there will be items that you will find difficult to answer and from which you may incur several mistakes. On the other hand, there will be entries that will be so easy for you. Jot them down. This way, you will be familiar with your strengths and weaknesses and you will be able to do some more practices on them. By doing so, you can improve your score by 40 points.

Lay out your studies

Organize your studies this way: Kaplan Premier, Manhattan GMAT, or Princeton Review Study Guides

The organization or lineup of the GMAT is elucidated in these books. They also include the questions that each section of the GMAT will be tackling and they also explain which strategies you may use to answer the test.  When you finish all these books, you can then move on to the official GMAT study guides. These guides contain questions that were taken from actual GMAT tests.

At around this time, you are more or less familiar with your strengths and weaknesses. You now know that you have to work harder and spend more time on your weak spots.   This way, you can manage and budget your time better and spend a considerable amount of your time perfecting those answers that you always have a hard time getting correct.

More serious practice tests

When you do your practice tests, try to simulate real testing conditions. Have 20-40 problems in each GMAT category ready every single week and work on them every weekend using real testing conditions which means, it should be done in a quiet place with a timer at hand, using the Computer-Adaptive Test (CAT) with one fifteen minute break using the exact structure of the GMAT. Take the test for three uninterrupted hours.

By following these steps, your capacity for learning will be increased in preparation for the real GMAT test. Just keep at it and maintain discipline in your studies.
